Kitchen Garden
To forget how to dig the earth and to tend the soil is to forget ourselves.
Mhandas K GandhiEvery year more than 25,000 South Australian children take part in education programs run by the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide.
Recognising the importance of engaging and educating children and the broader community including new Australians, the Adelaide Botanic Gardens Foundation has made the establishment of a Kitchen Garden a priority.
Across the developed world, more people are returning to the simple pleasures of growing their own food and there is no better way to engage a child's interest in the natural world than through the tending of a vegetable garden.
The creation and care of a Kitchen Garden will reinforce the link between plants and food, showing just how easy it is to enrich our lives through the growing, harvesting and cooking of fresh seasonal produce.
Key features of this exciting venture are likely to include a fully equipped kitchen with space for communal dining while the garden will showcase the best practices in sustainable horticulture incorporating food plants from many different cultures, demonstrating how to create a beautiful productive garden adapted to Adelaide's climate.
Associated programs could include horticultural support for schools encouraging the development of similar gardens across the state.
We are launching this project on the opening night of Tasting Australia with our Home Grown Gala Dinner. We are also seeking contributions to this inspiring project, bound to become a Garden's favourite, from corporations, individuals, community groups. Support can include naming rights sponsorship. Please contribute to this unique community resource by making a donation or by contacting the Foundation to arrange a presentation of this initiative and associated high profile opportunities currently being developed.
