A message from Ruth Hemmerling
Chair, Adelaide Botanic Gardens Foundation
To me, the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide have always been a special place, where people of all ages come for enjoyment, to learn and to be inspired. I take great personal pride in the Gardens, and in the contributions we make to conserving plant life and educating our many thousands of visitors about the natural environment. Our aim is to make sure that future generations will be as inspired by the Gardens as we are, so that our plant heritage can be preserved forever.
Each year, many couples choose to be married or to exchange vows in the Gardens. For other visitors, the Gardens is a place in which to walk, to play with their children or grandchildren, to picnic, to enjoy education or leisure programs, or simply to experience a sense of peacefulness and calm.
The Gardens receive considerable annual funding from the South Australian Government; however the financial landscape must be taken into consideration. Our Gardens continue to develop and grow as we see wonderful projects like the Santos Museum of Economic Botany launch and open to the public, and new and exciting initiatives like the Garden of Health move from concept to planning. These inspiring additions to our Gardens are only possible with the generous support of our corporate and individual donors and community groups.
I extend my deepest appreciation to everyone who renewed their commitment by making a generous gift in our Autumn Newsletter; your support of the Adelaide Botanic Gardens Foundation is a wonderfully practical way to make a gift that will bring lasting benefits. I am thrilled that the Foundation has been able to plan a wonderful evening with Peter Cundall and Sophie Thomson during October. This event will include a detailed discussion on the new Garden of Health, including the amazing selection of plants and why this is so important. Sophie Thomson has also kindly donated a personal visit to a supporter’s garden, and this will be raffled with funds going towards this amazing project.
If you, like me, have come to know and love the Gardens over the years, thank you for taking the opportunity to help us safeguard its future.
Sincerely
Ruth Hemmerling
