Behind the Scenes: Grower's Group Supports The Foundation

Monday, February 22, 2010

The Friends of the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide Growers Group first batch of plants sprouted forth in 2000 after an initial year of training at the Groups’ nursery located at Mount Lofty. Over the following years they have grown more than 700 species of plants that are not usually available in nurseries or known for being difficult to propagate, from material sourced from all three Botanic Gardens; Adelaide, Mount Lofty and Wittunga Botanic Gardens.

Plants sales have raised considerable funds for projects within the Gardens, and also provided the members with a great opportunity for sharing horticultural know how.  The first plant sale for 2010 will be held at the lower car park, Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens 28th February 11am to 2pm.

In 2010 the Growers Group are branching out and helping the Foundation with a special consignment. Using their skills of ‘what plants grow best at certain times’ and ‘how long different species take to get to a good size’, a much appreciated batch of healthy specimens should be ready by late April. The plants may have something to do with Foundation functions at that time of year; top secret but a lovely surprise.

The Growers Group are holding a propagating workshop on the 27th March 2010, that includes a demonstration of grafting roses, shrubs and fruit trees.

The Friends are always interested in welcoming new members that enable you to join many interesting groups such as the Growers Group. To find out more ring Stephanie Brown at the Friends Office on 08 8260 1742.
